Camp Pastor: Sam Bhatt...As a youth pastor for a number of years, Sam Bhatt has a strong heart for students and a desire to serve them. His riveting storytelling engages students as he humorously takes them through the issues they face, igniting them to pursue passionately the strength they can find in Jesus Christ. Sam attended Emmaus Bible College in Dubuque, Iowa.

So sorry for not updating you sooner!

Wednesday and Thursday of last week the adult team finished up ESL classes, and we enjoyed observing the progress the students had made throughout the week. As we have gotten to know the ladies on a more personal level, we have been blessed to hear their stories and have opportunities to pray for their situations. We made sabaya bread with one of the women’s classes on Thursday- the women were so excited to teach us something. As soon as the other classes found out we were making it a few different women came into the kitchen to show us the "right" (or how they do it) way of making it. It was incredible-- some women were in all black and as I would have been drenched in flour they didn’t have a speck on them.

During this time some of our team was able to make the bread and have conversations with some of the women. In these conversations it’s not uncommon as young women to be asked if you’re married, in Arabic culture the girls marry really young. This was a great lead in to find out more about the women’s lives. One young Yemeni woman shared with us about herself, she was married at fourteen and had her first baby by fifteen. She said she didn’t know her husband before they were married, and because of this she didn’t know how to love him; of course as women, hearing this broke our hearts. We felt for her so much. She then went on to say how she wakes up everyday sad and confused- that she had no joy. We were able to share with her about the joy Jesus has brought us.

That afternoon we had more teaching, specifically on women in Islam. We heard shocking stories of women being locked in their houses; some houses have all the doors and low windows barred. We couldn’t believe this was happening even here in the States. This brought us to the need for the Church to rise up and be strong in evangelism. R.C. Sproul once said “The reason we are so free to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in the United States is because it’s so watered down it doesn’t affect or threaten anyone.” As Christians we must shine the light of Christ, we can no longer live in ignorance to the injustices happening around us.

That night we watched the Stoning of Soraya M. The story told of a family in Iran, in which the husband wanted to divorce his wife in order to marry a 14 year old girl, she refused. He accused her of having an affair and threatened a man in order to get him to lie and say this was true. She was sentenced to stoning, her own father said she was no longer his child and threw the first stones. As a team we were devastated, this movie isn’t about uncommon happening, it’s based on a true story. After the movie we talked and discussed together. All I could think of was Jesus saying "he who is without sin can throw the first stone.” What a picture of the differences in Islam and Christianity.

Friday morning the Adult team left, while five of us stayed waiting for the youth to arrive. We were preparing for the huge garage sale that was planned for the next day. The few that stayed were able to go to the Detroit Institute of Arts, we saw Julliard students perform and a high school group that plays folk music. That night the youth team got here.

Saturday was the yard sale for the community. This is a huge outreach into the neighborhood. Some of the ESL students came to buy things, but there were some who actually partnered along side of us, it was so cool to see the fruit of the relationships that are being built. Our team made Sno-Cones, popcorn and cotton candy for the kids who came along. By the end of the day some of us were covered in sno-cone syrup, some in cotton candy and all of us were exhausted.

Sunday morning came along and we went to a local church, the pastor spoke on Mark 10:13-16. He taught our need to be like children before the Lord, totally dependent on Him and losing ourselves so that we can follow wherever He leads. That afternoon we went to the Arab-American National Museum. This shows how Arabs have been involved in American society and their contributions to the culture. A really cool thing about this museum is almost all the stories are based on individuals; at some parts you can even listen to the person tell their story. Last night we had a tour of Detroit, seeing beautiful buildings and hockey town of course! We stopped and looked around a Methodist church that has the largest organ in the Mid-West, its smallest pipe is the size of a pencil and its largest is three stories high!

This morning we will having the second ESL for the week, please be praying that the youth and leaders who are here will have peace, comfort and boldness while they’re aiding the teachers. Pray that we will be a unified team, shining the love of Christ by the way we love each other. Pray for strength, spiritually and physically, we’re all starting to realize how tired we are!

Days 2 and 3

Monday morning was the start of our English as a second language (ESL) classes for the week. Half of our team participated in helping the students and the other half worked with the children. The team members in the classes were split into various levels of ESL, the lowest being “ABC” level and the highest being intermediate II. Seeing how much the women in the highest level have progressed from the ABC class was very impressive. And we learned a little Arabic along the way, even some dancing! The girls in childcare met a ten year old girl wearing a hijab; it was shocking to hear that she started wearing it at seven years old!

The afternoon was our “immersion” into the Muslim culture. We went straight to a local mosque, took off our shoes and watched as about 15 men and a little girl (no more than three years old) did afternoon prayers. Prayers were followed by a Q and A session with the imam and some of his students. This was a time purely for asking question, though it was difficult to get a direct answer. After returning from the mosque we debriefed on what had been said, or more appropriately which of our questions had not fully been answered. The whole team was confronted with the realization of how much control the mosque and imam have over the community. We were struck with the conviction of how great a stronghold Islam is and how embedded the lies are in the mind of a Muslim.

On a lighter note we continued our emersion with dinner at an authentic Yemeni restaurant where we sat on a deewan (couch on the floor) and ate food with our hands. The food ranged from lamb broth to saltah, to garlic hummus, and motboha, all eaten with flat bread as our utensil! Some girls were able to visit the kitchen to see how aseed, giant dumpling with gravy (and we still stuck our fingers in to eat it!) was made. We finished the meal with an incredible Yemeni chai and headed back to watch a movie called “Dreams and Visions”, a movie about Muslims having radical encounters with Jesus, and how those encounters lead to salvation. The movie left us feeling assured by the knowledge that nothing is impossible with God!

This morning we learned how to make Arabic qah’wa (coffee) and later we visited the place where it was made! We got to see coffee beans roasting and learn the difference between Turkish and American coffee. A few of our ladies were interviewed in their ESL classes, as the students wondered if we were married and where we were staying. We put our gifts to use in childcare, playing songs and making crafts (or some of us just acting goofy!). The gift utilization continued into the afternoon as we practiced “landscape ministry”—that is, pulling weeds and laying mulch.

Over lunch, we listened to a speaker on contextualization and “the insider movement.” For those who didn’t take the Perspectives course, contextualization is an approach to evangelism that radically adapts certain words in the Bible to make sense in the context of a person’s given religious culture. The insider movement is a more specific technique that says new believers don’t have to reject their old religion in order to embrace new life in Jesus. This idea we continued to discuss throughout the day. While it is certainly a controversial subject, we concluded as a group that God’s truth is supreme, and that the Gospel is the hope of salvation to every fallen man.

Dinner was a real treat as we got out of the heat and into the air-conditioning of a Lebanese restaurant. The food was mind blowing! Chicken, beef and lamb shish kabobs, kafta, kibbi, fatoush, falafel, Lebanese style rice, hummus, stuffed grape leaves and freshly made pitas with garlic and tahini sauce.

Team unity is at an all-time high! Please pray that this continues, and carries over into the arrival of the youth team. Pray God would bring dreams and visions to the Muslims we encounter, He can use anything! Pray for continuing opportunities to have deep conversations with Muslims about spiritual things. Pray that God would supply wisdom and discernment as we face the darkness of Islam.

D1 Team Day 1

Last night we rolled into the Arab-American Festival, which annually pulls in a crowd of around 300,000 people from the area. Ethnic music, delicious shish tamook sandwiches, segregated dancing, and countless vendors lined the street and we got a little bit of the cross-cultural experience we had hoped to encounter. We were intrigued by the contrast of head scarves and tank tops, of belly dancing outfits and burkas. Our team was trying to blend in, but there were also Christian groups very open and outgoing throughout the festival. Some team members embraced the culture, buying hijabs, henna and incredible food. In the crowd the Lebanese-American people stood out because of their strong sense of nationalism, some wore flags around their shoulders, and others had shirts pointing to their pride.

As we arrived to unload our vehicles, we heard the call to prayer sounding from across the street; a chant both intriguing and eerie. The call sounds periodically, even as we draft this, so that it seems to pervade into every setting. Turning to a prayer more familiar, we’ve made ourselves quite at home at the local church. This morning’s sermon uncannily corresponded with our team’s daily devotion. (Who else but God!) The pastor spoke on John 6:53 “So Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you.” He emphasized our dire need for Jesus and our incapability to have a purposeful life apart from Christ. He is solely the thing we live for and the only one who can meet our needs, nothing and no one else.

As we returned from church we had the most incredible Yemeni chicken and rice, so good! Since it’s a Sunday we had no direct outreach tasks and we were able to watch two very interesting, informative documentaries exploring Islam and their relationship to the western world. The first, “Sacrificed Survivors: the Untold Story of the Ground Zero Mega-Mosque” was discussing the mosque plans a few blocks away from ground zero, interviews with 9-11 survivors and families of victims were the main focus of this video. The second film “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against The West” was discussing the jihad—“holy struggle”—this is the duty of Muslims to expand Islam, at any cost. This film showed our team the lies and strongholds Satan has placed among Muslim countries and even right here in the States.

Please continue to pray that our team will develop a deep love for the Muslims we encounter. That the Holy Spirit will be moving in incredible ways in and through us. That we will have discerning spirits while in conversations with the people we come across.
We’re so thankful for the incredible support system God has placed back home! Can’t wait to share more with you all!

Well, I've had good intentions to update this each day but our internet connection here is sporadic at best. So, let me try to update you quickly on how things are going.

On Sunday morning, we started out with a opening orientation with the YWAM Staff. We then headed over to the Brooklyn Tabernacle for an awesome worship service. After church, we enjoyed a quick lunch and then started our trek across the Brooklyn Bridge. Once we arrived back in Manhattan, we had an opportunity to do a Prayer Walk through the Financial District, Battery Park, World Trade Center and more. It was a great opportunity to get to know the area better and to get a better understanding of the people who live and work in those areas. One great parts of the walk was the opportunity we had to pray in front of the building near the World Trade Center that Muslim groups are trying to buy for a new mosque. As you probably know, there is a lot of division surrounding this possible purchase and it was a privilege to pray for God's hand to be upon all that will happen regarding this.

Monday morning we kicked off the day by having a discussion on the nature and character of God. We then headed to Harlem for our 1st Prayer Station of the week. I was so very proud of our team because they jumped right into this challenging activity with both feet. It was such a joy for me to witness our team praying for countless numbers of people on all four corners of the block we were on. From there, we headed over to Central Park for an activity called Sidewalk Evangelism. We broke up into teams of three and spread out through the park and evangelized by drawing pictures and writing scriptures on rocks and the sidewalk. It was an amazing way to spread the Gospel through art. One of the coolest parts of this activity was standing back and watching people take pictures of what we had drawn on the ground. After our time of Sidewalk Evangelism, we had some NY Pizza in the park and then headed back to the church.

Please keep praying for God to work in and through us and for His protection and strength.

Well, our NYC Mission Trip team made it Saturday night (a bit late since our train was late and we had some delays on the track). Once we got to the First Ukrainian Assembly of God, we unloaded all of our stuff in our rooms and ate dinner. After dinner, we had an opportunity to walk around the East Village area of Manhattan to get a better idea of where we are staying and of the people of live in the area.

We had a quick debrief time and then went to bed. Praise God for that!

UNITED is the local chapter of the Nation Network of Youth Ministers in Rhode Island. UNITED is passionate about bringing about unity in youth ministries throughout Rhode Island. Therefore, UNITED will be hosting youth ministry events four times a year where all youth groups in Rhode Island are invited to come together for a time of worship, teaching, fellowship and more. The very first UNITED event will be held at CCF (during REAL LIFE) on March 1 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

2009 Summer Mission Trip -- Rutland, VT -- July 12-17

IGNITE is headed to the beautiful Green Mountains of VT this summer to partner with YouthWorks for our 2009 summer mission trip.

YouthWorks…purpose is to provide life-changing, Christ centered youth mission opportunities that cross borders of race and culture. YouthWorks provide ministry experiences that vary from painting and rehabilitation projects, facilitating a Kids Club, to partnering with local organizations who are working to meet community needs.

Ministry: While in Rutland,our students will spend two days working with children and two days serving local ministries and programs that seek to address the very basic needs of residents. Kid’s Club — A hands-on program, led by our IGNITE students, offering high-energy games, crafts, skits, songs and interactive lessons all designed to help kids learn about Jesus. Local Ministries — We might be at a specific site both days or partner with different organizations on a rotational basis. Our group may serve places like homeless shelters, soup kitchens, thrift stores, elderly centers and children’s programs. Because wonderful things happen when students from different groups serve together, our group will be mixed with students from other groups for the week.
Evening Activities...are designed to give our students insight into the lives of local residents and the culture of the area. YouthWorks will try to arrange for free evening activities, but an additional cost may be required. Please plan to bring an additional $10 to cover any extra costs. A list of activities YouthWorks have done in the past include: Go to the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Gym, Take a hike in the Green Mountains, Community Cookout and more.

Deep Freeze

IGNITE is heading up to Camp Berea (Hebron, NH) January 16-18 for an incredible weekend of Deep Freeze. "What is Deep Freeze" you ask. Well, Deep Freeze is a weekend event where hundreds of teens from all across New England come together to make lasting memories by growing closer to God and one another. Deep Freeze has games, chapel sessions, rockin' music and all kinds of great activities.

How much does it cost? $175 -- this includes lodging, transportation and all meals at Camp Berea.

Battle of the Burgers -- pt. 2

WOW! Battle of the Burgers was completely sweet action! With somewhere around 100 teens, almost 30 visitors, at least two people giving their lives to Christ, awesome worship and more -- it could not have been better.

This week, 28 students and 5 adults will travel to Eastern University in PA to partner with Student Life Missions Camp. Our group will be working with the Royal Gardens Association. This organization helps to minister to other through gardening and and landscaping projects. We are asking the body of Christ at CCF to join with us in pray and God to work in and through us, for safety, for the Good News to be spread and for God to be glorified. Hot Chocolate Evangelism -- pt. 2

Tonight, our last activity of the week was to do the Hot Chocolate Evangelism in the Tenderloin Neighborhood! It was obvious that the people in this area are used to the people of YWAM bringing out hot chocolate because there were literally people walking up to us asking if they could receive a cup. We had some great conversations with people. We prayed for many!

It's amazing how well the people in the Tenderloin respond to us because of YWAM. They truly appreciate what the people of YWAM are doing for their neighborhood. Many of them told us how much they appreciated us as well, and that what we were doing makes a difference. This was encouraging to our students. Many of our students are so burdened by the despair and hopelessness they see in the eyes of these people. To hear that we were truly making a difference really boosted our students spirits.

This trip has been amazing! God has worked in us and through us! Praise Him!

Tomorrow morning we get up early, pack, eat, clean and have one final debrief. We'll be heading out of the Tenderloin around 10 am to ride the BART (Subway) back out to the airport. Please pray that all will go smoothly (the clean-up, subway, security, etc.)

We'll be back tomorrow night around midnight! See you then!

Block Party

Today, we worked with three of the other youth groups here (along with some local ministries) to put on an incredible block party. The block party consisted of a clothing table, food table (hot dogs, fruit, candy bars, etc.), snow cone stand, cotton candy table, a bouncy house for kids, an art table (where people could paint on this HUGE piece of paper), entertainment stage (It just so happened that a youth choir/band from Seattle was in the city and they came and rocked the place out), a prayer station (where people could come and receive prayer and a preaching stage.

The event was truly amazing. There were hundreds of people who came to enjoy the food, clothing, entertainment, fellowship and more. Our students were divided into teams with the other church's, so it was the teens who were running each of these stations (of course with some adult help as well). They did such an incredible job of setting up the party, carrying out their jobs and cleaning up afterwards.

I'm so proud of these students! It is such a privilege to partner with them on this trip! They are amazing!

Commitment Service

Whoa, what a night! Tonight, all the groups (4 youths groups in all) participated in a Commitment Service. This service consisted of different stations -- stations like a commitment station (this station really challenged us to consider our commitment to Jesus), a station with a cross, nails and papers (this station was designed to allow us to write down sins, burdens, etc. and nail them to the cross), a station where we could wash others feet, a prayer station and more.

God truly moved in our lives in a special way! All week we have been pouring out our lives through the ministry of evangelism, prayer and service. Tonight, God poured into us. Some of our students were challenged, some were given clarity about God's call on their lives, some felt God leading them in certain directions, some worshipped, some just rested in God's presence. It was an incredible night!

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Homeless Plunge -- pt. 2

After a night of sleeping in our clothes that we wore yesterday -- and NOT putting on any deodorant, make-up, new clothes, etc. -- we kicked off the day by watching all the other youth groups eat their breakfast. We then did our daily work duties (kitchen clean-up, sweeping, cleaning bathrooms, etc.). After that, we headed out for 8 hours of the Homeless Plunge on the streets of SF.

Each team had certain places to visit, places like The Social Security Office, Shelters, Soup Kitchens, Health Care Facilities and more. The point of visiting these places was to get a feel for the places homeless people visit on a regular basis to survive out on the streets.

This activity definitely opened our eyes to what it's like for people who live on the street. Even though we don't know what it's really like, we have a better idea! Our students hearts have been turned towards those that are less fortunate than us. In addition, all of us have been reminded of how blessed we truly are.

Homeless Plunge

When we returned to the YWAM base, we went in immediately to our orientation for the "Homeless Plunge" activity. Much to our students surprise, the Homeless Plunge began tonight. What does that mean? It means we are going to do our best to understand what it's like to live the life of a homeless person.

Therefore, we're sleeping in our clothes tonight (that's right, the clothes we've been wearing all day long) and we're wearing them again tomorrow! Not only that, there's no deodorant, make up, perfume/cologne, etc. We will get up at 7 am to watch everyone else eat! We will then do our base Work Duties and then we'll head out to the streets until 4 pm. While on the streets, we'll visit places homeless people visit to receive help. We'll eat at a soup kitchen. We'll do a lot of walking and more!

Please pray for us! Some of our students worlds were rocked when they heard that there would be no showers tonight, no deodorant, no pajamas, NO NOTHING!

Fisherman's Wharf

After the Prayer walk, we took our evening off Fisherman's Wharf. We took the F Train down to the Wharf. While there, we ate great burgers at "In And Out Burger." The burgers rocked! We took pictures of Alcatraz and the Golden Great Bridge. We shopped! Boy, did we shop!

Definitely the best part of the night was going back down to the Market Street on the Cable Car. We had bunches of fun riding it! You'll see the great pictures!

Skyscrapper Safari

After lunch, we broke up into five groups for a prayer walk over the Financial District of SF. For many, this was the first time any of them had participated on a prayer walk of any kind.

Each team was given a map, with directions and information about each building we would be praying over. We had the opportunity to pray over the Bank of American Headquarters, The Trans America Pyramid, the U.S. Immigrations and Naturalization Building and seven more.

Each group seemed to enjoy the prayer walk (except when they got lost a couple of times) and felt like this was something we could definitely bring home to Rhode Island. We talked about how we could do a prayer walk in Providence, in our neighborhoods, around our schools, etc.

It was a real good experience!

The Hunt

This morning, our first activity was called "The Hunt." Basically, The Hunt is a Scavenger Hunt -- with a twist. We broke up into 4 groups and headed out to the streets of San Francisco. While out there, we had to meet security guards, we had to get coffee cups from two different coffee places, we had to come up with a creative way to bless a homeless person, we rode on elevators to the top of three different hotels, we encouraged a doorman, we had to pick up two publications in a different language and much more. It was a blast!

When we got back, we presented our "stuff" to our YWAM staff leaders and got graded on our effort. Because the results were so close, each team had to put on a show for the "Judges" (aka YWAM staff). Our skits consisted of raps, dancing, dramas and more. The Judges were truly blow away. You wouldn't believe the talent we have in this youth group. Mr. Bob is trying to get the videos up for you to view.

Hot Chocolate Evangelism

What a night? We hooked up with PCOM (Presbyterian Church of ? -- It's another youth group from SoCal -- That's Southern California -- Specifically, there from the O. C.) We went to the Market area of San Francisco (Cable Car Turn-Around) to pass out Hot Chocolate to those who needed a hot drink. It was only in the 60s today so tonight was pretty cold.

There were many receptive and thankful people who enjoyed our hot chocolate. We had some really great conversations! We had some really tough conversations! We met some incredible people! We met some people who are really hurting! It's quite an experience walking up to a homeless person, giving them some hot chocolate and having a conversation with them. There are so many interesting stories we have heard and many more to come. It's amazing, these people just want someone to talk to, to have a conversation with. We are showing the love of Jesus Christ to them by connecting with them -- by letting them know that they are still human, that they are still valued, that they are loved by God. It has truly been a wonderful night!

BTW, One of our groups met a man tonight who is from Providence.

Our students are really catching on to what's going on here in SF. They are really getting out of their comfort zones. They are beginning to catch God's heart for this lost city. They are growing in many ways. Oh, and us adults are as well!

Bucket Brigade

After a quick break, we headed out to do the "Bucket Brigade" activity. In this activity, we went out in groups of 4 or 5 to local business in the Tenderloin. We would walk in the business, introduce ourselves to them, and offer to serve them -- by sweeping, cleaning windows, etc. It was truly an amazing thing to see the reactions from these people when they found out that we didn't want anything in return, we just wanted to bless them. In our debrief time, we all talked about how a little can go a long way when it comes to serving people.
We just ate dinner! Some of us are about to go to Starbucks (yes, we need some caffeine), and then it will be off to do the "Hot Chocolate Evangelism."

Golden Gate Park...and other things

This morning we kicked off our day by making 2 sack lunches, we then ate some breakfast (cereal, bagels, etc.), had an evangelism teaching, a Church team time -- and all of this happened before 9:30.

After that, we headed over to First Baptist Church (http://www.fbcsf.org/) for worship. We heard a great teaching on surrendering our "ALL" to the Lord. The message was based off of the Rich Young Ruler.

From there, we rode the bus to Golden Gate Park for our "Sack Lunch with the Homeless." In this activity, we all took 2 sack lunches, one for our self and one for a homeless person. This activity was truly amazing because it stretched us like never before. We all had to get comfortable with walking up to a complete stranger, offering lunch to them, sitting down to eat with them, and then carry on a conversation with them. After lunch, we came back to the YWAM base to debrief the activity.

It's bed time! We are all going to bed after a wonderful day of travel, new experiences, new friends and much more.

Tonight's "Lost and Found" activity was a great success! The activity challenged us to approach people to ask them questions about the Tenderloin Area of San Francisco. This allowed us to get comfortable with the area and with talking to strangers out on the streets.

We made it!

Well, we finally made it to San Francisco! It's 6:40 pm (San Francisco Time), and we've been up already for 18 hours and bed time is not for another 4 hours. Talk about a long day.

We are having a great time! We are all experiencing new things. Many members of our team have never even been away from the east coast. We were all split up on our 4 hour flight from Chicago to San Francisco so we all met some new people. I had the privilege to sit next to a man from California who told me all kinds of cool stuff about the area. I was able to share with him why we were coming to San Fran and by the end of the flight, he gave me $50 to go towards the ministry of YWAM. Praise God!

Tonight, we are doing a scavenger hunt called "Lost and Found." This activity will give us the opportunity to get used to the area and to talking with people on the streets. We're really looking forward to all that God is going to do in and through us this week!

We're tired, but excited to see God show off His glory!
